Singapore Tops Crypto-Friendly City Ranking: Transparency is Key
Singapore ranked first in the 2026 Global Crypto-Friendly City Index, leading traditional financial centers like London and New York. The Asia-Pacific region also performed strongly, taking six of the top ten spots, showing Asia's growing influence in attracting digital asset funds, entrepreneurs, and infrastructure.
The index, released by Multipolitan, a platform focused on cross-border flows, evaluates global cities based on regulatory clarity, tax efficiency, institutional infrastructure, and actual adoption.
Nirbhay Handa, CEO of Multipolitan, said: 'Singapore's top position reflects a deeper structural shift in global finance. Crypto competitiveness is increasingly driven not by speculation, but by regulatory predictability, operational infrastructure, and capital efficiency.'
Besides Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Seoul, Kuala Lumpur, and Taipei also entered the global top ten. Multipolitan believes this reflects the growing competitiveness of the Asia-Pacific region in digital assets, especially in licensing regimes, stablecoin and ETF frameworks, digital-native consumer groups, and more competitive tax environments.
Low Tax Rates No Longer the Only Factor: Regulation and Infrastructure Matter More
Multipolitan noted that low tax rates alone are insufficient to sustain long-term crypto competitiveness. The best-performing cities typically combine transparent governance, reliable licensing pathways, institutional-grade infrastructure, and higher everyday usage.
The platform calls this model 'low tax, high trust,' distinguishing modern digital asset hubs from traditional financial centers, which, though mature, may limit innovation, capital formation, and ecosystem development due to higher compliance complexity.
Emphasis on 'Deployed Infrastructure,' Not Just Policy Announcements
The index focuses on deployed infrastructure rather than policy announcements. Multipolitan cites Singapore's regulated stablecoin framework, Hong Kong's spot virtual asset ETF, Dubai's licensed VASP ecosystem, and merchant and government payment integration as key factors supporting city rankings.
The article mentions that the Monetary Authority of Singapore published a regulatory framework for stablecoins issued locally in 2023. Although not yet formal law, authorities have indicated legislative work will proceed.
Different Cities Compete via Different Paths: License Expansion, Regulatory Sandboxes, and Payment Integration
The Multipolitan index also shows Hong Kong consolidates its position through exchange licenses and institutional product expansion. Thailand builds competitive advantages via regulatory sandboxes and tax exemptions. Dubai ranks high due to zero personal income tax and clearer regulatory infrastructure under the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority.
